ABOUT US

In September 1948, the Water Works Board of the City of Prattville was formed under Title 37 of the Code of Alabama. The purposes of the Board are to acquire, construct, operate, maintain, improve and extend a water works system in the City of Prattville and surrounding territory.

The Board presently consists of and is governed by a three-member board of directors appointed by the Prattville City Council. The members are Mr. Terry Bowen (Chairman), Mr. Larry Puckett (Vice-Chairman), and Mr. Ed Mullins (Member). Daily operations are handled by the Executive Director, Mr. J. N. (Buddy) Buckner, Jr., and an office manager. The current staff consists of 34 personnel including 6 administrative/clerical staff and 28 water system operations and maintenance staff. The staff includes 9 ADEM certified operators, Grade II to Grade IV. The Board is also the collection agent for the city for sewer and sanitation services.

The Water Works Board currently provides water service to approximately 16,287 residential and 1,529 commercial accounts in its service area. The system operates 18 wells and 12 storage tanks and over 500 miles of distribution line.

The system relied solely upon deep wells as its water source until January 2001. At that time, because of the population growth in its coverage area, it was necessary to develop a surface water supply source to meet the growth demands. This was accomplished through the formation of the Five Star Water Supply District in conjunction with four other systems namely, Wetumpka Water & Sewer Board, Tri-Community Water Authority, City of Millbrook and Holtville Water System. Prattville now receives a little over 30% of its water from the Five Star District.
